Artificial Grass Installation Guide: 12 Steps to a Perfect Lawn

  • Step 1: Site Base Preparation

    • Remove 3-4 inches of existing sod and soil.

    • Cap or remove any sprinklers.

    • Set a rough grade to ensure proper drainage.

    Step 2: Install Drain Rock

    • Lay 2-2½ inches of drain rock.

    • Hose down and compact to 90% using a vibrating plate compactor.

Step 3: Add Road Base or Decomposed Granite

    • Lay 1-1½ inches of class II road base or decomposed granite.

    • Compact thoroughly.

Step 4: Weed Barrier Fabric (Optional)

    • Consider laying weed barrier fabric over the base.

    • This helps control weed growth, especially in areas with invasive weeds.

    • In many cases, you can install turf directly on the compacted base.

    Step 5: Compact the Base

    • Hose down the base layer.

    • Compact to 90% for a solid foundation.

    Step 6: Level the Surface

    • Ensure the base surface is as level and smooth as possible.

    • Create a slight grade for optimal drainage.

    Artificial Grass Installation

    Step 7: Prepare the Turf

    • Roll out the artificial grass with blades facing down.

    • Let it acclimate for at least 1-2 hours under the sun.

Step 8: Cut and Fit the Turf

    • Lay out the turf onto the base.

    • Using a carpet knife or razor knife, trim excess turf from the backside (approximately 3 stitches in from each side).

    • Cut the turf to fit the desired area.

    Step 9: Secure the Edges

    • Fasten one end of the turf with 40D or 60D Bright Common nails (5-6 inches long), spaced 3-4 inches apart along the edges.

    • Stretch the turf taut and secure it as you work across the area.

    • Place additional nails every 12-24 inches throughout the center and every 3-4 inches along the perimeter.

    Step 10: Seaming the Turf

    • Align the turf edges carefully, ensuring the grain runs in the same direction and the seams match the stitching gauge.

    • Use seaming tape and turf glue (or adhesive recommended by the manufacturer) to join seams.

    • Secure the seams with 6"x1"x6" staples spaced 4 inches apart, ensuring they are flush with the surface and not countersunk.

    Step 11: Apply Infill

    • After securing the turf, power broom the surface to lift the blades.

    • Evenly spread the recommended infill using a drop spreader.

    • Use a grading rake or broom to work the infill into the turf base.

    • Never use regular sand; use only manufacturer-recommended infill.

    Step 12: Final Grooming

    • Power broom the turf again to make the blades stand tall.

    • Trim any excess turf blades with carpet scissors.

    • Clean the area with a leaf blower or broom.

    When to Install Wire Mesh

Consider installing a wire mesh barrier after removing existing sod and before adding drain rock and decomposed granite. This optional step protects your lawn from gophers and moles that may damage your turf. If these critters are common in your area, a gopher wire barrier can be a valuable investment. If they're not an issue, you can skip this step.

Pro Tips for a Professional Finish

✅ Always lay the turf under the sun before installation to reduce stiffness.

✅ Always stretch the turf taut for a smooth finish.

✅ Avoid overlapping seams and ensure consistent grain direction.

✅ Use bender board to define the perimeter and protect the turf edges.

✅ Use only manufacturer-recommended infill to avoid damaging the turf.

    Additional Installation Considerations

    Melting

Reflective windows can magnify sunlight and cause turf to melt. Apply a protective coating on windows to prevent damage.

    Weather

Our turf performs well in all climates. It drains effectively, withstands wind, and can handle intense sunlight without fading or damage.

    Pet Odor

Use ZeoFill to neutralize pet odors effectively. It acts as a molecular sieve, removing ammonia from pet waste and keeping your lawn fresh.
